The EASIEST way to meditate

Meditation is like giving your brain a break, a cleanse or a rest. Meditation effects our bodies in the exact opposite way that stress does. It helps our minds and bodies heal and repair as well as shields us from the damage of new stressors. With sustained practice, meditation can usher the practitioner into expanded realms of consciousness. There are no potential negative side effects. No equipment is needed.

the easiest way to meditate...

Meditation CAN be AS EASY AS 1…2…3…

How do I meditate? That’s a tough question. Let’s start by talking about what meditation actually is:

Meditation is a mindfulness practice that has been around for millennia. Mindfulness means becoming more fully aware of the present moment without attachment or expectation.

Meditation is the spirit of being “in the now”. There is no religious or spiritual component to mindfulness or meditation. ANYONE with any belief system or from any religious background can enjoy the benefits of meditation.

Like any skill, Meditation takes time and sustained practice to master.

The benefits of meditation have been scientifically proven. It’s effects are far reaching and cumulative over time. The longer you maintain a committed meditation practice, the more benefits you will realize.

IMMEDIATE BENEFITS OF MEDITATION:

  • Slower heart rate
  • Release of physical tension
  • A sense of having a break (from stress) for a few moments
  • Calmer mood and mindset

LONGTERM BENEFITS OF DAILY MEDITATION:

  • Reduced cortisol levels and less reactivity toward stress
  • Greater relief from physical, stress-related pain (like headaches)
  • Improved creativity
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Greater overall clarity
  • Better decision making
  • Greater resilience to stress
  • Improved memory, learning ability, intuition
  • Increased ability to focus and concentrate
  • Dramatic increases in personal self-awareness
  • Greater emotional and mental stability
  • Creation of new neural pathways between the left and right hemispheres

But how do i meditate?

There are many different types of meditation. Different styles will resonate with different people. All meditation involves being fully present and quieting the mind away from other distractions. Another important part of meditation is posture. It is crucial to be upright (laying down is okay too in some instances) with the spine erect. This allows for the energy to flow freely up and down our central energetic axis from root to crown and back again.

FINDING A COMFORTABLE SEAT: If a practitioner is going to engage in a seated meditation, the most important aspect is to be comfortable in that seated position. To align oneself properly in meditation, insure that: 1. The 2 sitting bones are rooted firmly into the ground (or chair) 2. The knees are below the hips (sometimes props are needed to aid with this) 3. The spine is upright and stacked (ears over shoulders, shoulders over hips)

STEADY BREATH: Finding a calm and steady stream of breath is another important part of meditation. Start by slowing down and deepening the breath. Then let the inhales and exhales become the same length. Once that happens, allow yourself to breathe normally without effort or thought.

RELEASING THE MIND: Of course distraction happens. This is normal! Meditation does not mean thoughts do not happen. It also doesn’t mean we do not notice sounds or bugs or things around us. Meditation is a practice of non-attachment and letting go. If thoughts come up, which they will, notice them, move them out of your awareness and then return to your meditation gently, gracefully, without judgement. If you find yourself distracted by something around you, notice it and gently return back to your meditation.

Remember: Just like physical postures, meditation takes practice. Just like Asana, meditation is often challenging the first few times. It reveals sides of ourselves that may be dark or scary. Just like in asana practice, we may notice areas of the body where we are tight, strained or week, in meditation we start to notice thought patterns or belief systems that we want to soften.

Ashtanga for Beginners

Ashtanga yoga is primarily a self-practice. That’s what is cool about it! You just try and keep trying and see how you progress. When you can, you seek out a qualified teacher. So here’s our favourite Ashtangi, Tina Bock, offering you an express primary series for beginners. This is a perfect place to start your Ashtanga Yoga practice!

Ashtanga for beginners

You could also call it Ashtanga express

What is Ashtanga Yoga? It’s a pretty disciplined and classical approach to yoga. It came to us through Pattabhi Jois via his teacher, Krishnamacharya. Ashtanga Yoga is progressive and linear. You start where you are. You start where you can and you practice and repeat 6-days per week and track your own progression.

If this is too much to start, feel free instead to begin JUST with sun salutations. Maybe you’ll do 1 round of sun salutations, maybe 2 or 3. You just do what you can and then come back again the next day and try again. Ashtanga Yoga may seem intimidating for beginners but it is actually a very accessible yoga practice since it’s progressive and linear. Ashtanga Yoga really takes a “do what you can” kind of attitude to your yoga practice.

How to shop for a yoga person?

First of all if you get a gift for a yogi, we recommend being mindful. Take yoga into your purchasing. What the F do we even mean?

1. Think about where the product comes from, who makes it and what it’s made out of.

In general we recommend trying to buy from small or local businesses where your purchase actually means something. By shopping from the little guy, you will directly impacting someone who works hard and is grateful for your patronage.

The best gifts are ones that we didn’t even know we wanted but can REALLY use and enjoy right? Is there something that the yogi you love in your life really wants but would never buy for themselves? This could be something like a high-quality yoga mat, a gift of a mentorship or private lesson with a teacher they admire.  Sometimes the gifts we love are the ones that aren’t necessities but accessories we cherish, like an essential oils set, sweet new crystal, or favourite yoga book.

What is something that a yoga person would really want but wouldn't necessarily buy for themselves?

Just like with yoga, gifting is all about intention. The thought truly does matter and in general most of us are just grateful to have been thought about! If you’re low on cash, a thoughtful card or homemade gift goes a LONG way. It’s easy to find a great cookie recipe on the internet that meets all of your yoga friend’s dietary stuff. Put your baked goods in brown paper boxes, tie with a bow and voilà!

Some other great gifts for the yogi in your life are:

1. Studio passes!

2. Restaurant gift certificates

3. Kitchen stuff- like almond or coconut oil, special spices or teas.

4. Plants! Who doesn’t love plants!

5. Meditation chimes, singing bowls or crystal bowls

The Clinical Benefits of Yoga

The Clinical Benefits of Yoga

Yoga has been recognized for centuries as a powerful holistic practice. However, it’s only in fairly recent times that modern-day science has proven the benefits yogis have come to enjoy for generations. In fact, over the last decade alone, dozens of clinical trials have been conducted in regard to yoga. Just last 2019, for instance, 22 randomized clinical trials into yoga’s benefits were conducted. These included trials that tested yoga’s correlation with cognition, mental health, and more. All of these studies, though, share the common result that yoga’s advantages aren’t just for the spirit—but also for the body.

How Are Yoga’s Benefits Clinically Verified?

But just how is a practice like yoga clinically verified for benefits? Through painstaking trials and studies conducted by clinical researchers in partnership with experienced yogis. Among the most critical careers in healthcare, clinical researchers are a cut above your average analyst. This is because they’re specially trained in monitoring data, ensuring protocols, implementing ethical guidelines, and conducting tests in regard to medical and science-related fields. This ensures that all control tests and results are especially relevant and accurate in relation to a direct hypothesis. In these cases, the research, analysis, and problem-solving skills of clinical researchers allow them to verify or debunk claims regarding yoga’s benefits. It is through these researchers and their trials that we can confidently share some of yoga’s most relevant clinically-verified advantages.

Clinically Proven Yoga Benefits:
1) Improves Aging

Yoga’s ability to improve overall well-being is not just true for younger practitioners, but also for older adults. As a matter of fact, an international study with participants aged 61 to 83 years old has accurately proven this. According to this trial, which was led by researchers from the UK, yoga’s strength and balance enhancing abilities can drastically improve senior mobility. According to the trials’ results, yoga was able to offset age-related muscle loss and heighten bone density. Aside from this, the breathing practices and postures upheld in yoga were shown to improve cardiovascular function and sleep hygiene. Both of which are known to decline with age. As such, it’s safe to say that older adults wary of practicing yoga have much more to gain should they try.

2) Eases Anxiety

Since 2017, studies on the mental health effects of yoga have highlighted how the practice specifically eases depression and anxiety. One notable clinical trial on anxiety even reveals that Kundalini yoga is efficacious in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Considered one of the most impactful yet undertreated mental health conditions, GAD affects nearly 4 million adults annually. For most people, GAD is a lifelong condition that usually starts in childhood or early adolescence. If left untreated, GAD can create an overwhelming sense of dread that can make it hard to complete even simple tasks. Thankfully, yoga has been an effective substitute for GAD treatment among patients uncomfortable or unable to access cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). This is because of the mindfulness and controlled breathing that yoga espouses. Over time, these have been proven to help calm and center a person. Through this, mental health crises can be averted and anxiety can be kept under control.

3) Encourages Immunity

No other disease has swept the world like COVID-19. A highly-contagious virus, COVID-19 is best avoided and survived through good hygiene, vaccines, and immunity. However, among those three factors, arguably the most difficult to maintain is a good immune system. Interestingly, though, yoga has been celebrated for its immunity-boosting benefits, especially in light of the pandemic. Given that yoga is a practice that uplifts the body, mind, and spirit, it is believed to create a well-rounded approach that helps hasten healing. New pandemic-related evidence even suggests that yoga breathing practices can help patients recover from the virus. Simple video tutorials given to patients in Italy were even deemed essential in retraining the pulmonary system. As such, this only solidifies the role and importance that yoga has in the new normal.

In conclusion, yoga is a holistic endeavor that’s been proven effective on multiple fronts. Designed with various forms and styles for every need and circumstance, yoga is a worthwhile addition to invest in. If you want to start practicing yoga today, why not try this super gentle yoga stretch to start? If you’re looking for something more challenging or specific, though, please feel free to reach out and be a member with us today.
